Recliner Chair Size Guide: Upright Depth, Reclined Space and Fit

A recliner needs two footprints: the space it occupies upright and the space it uses when extended. Choose by overall width, upright depth, reclined depth and seat dimensions—not by the word “petite” alone. Then confirm the exact model’s wall-clearance and power requirements before placing it beside a table or against a wall.

That distinction matters with tailored chairs that look like ordinary accent seating. Universal Furniture’s Hudson and Lucca designs show how a quiet silhouette can conceal a much longer footprint in use. This guide compares their listed dimensions to help you plan the room, rather than judge comfort or clearance from a photograph.

Which recliner measurements matter?

  • Overall width: the chair’s outside-to-outside dimension, including its arms.
  • Upright depth: the front-to-back dimension before reclining.
  • Reclined depth: the listed overall depth in the extended position. It is not the same as distance from the wall.
  • Seat height and seat depth: useful for comparing the sitting position. Neither guarantees a comfortable fit for every person.
  • Required operating clearance: the manufacturer’s instructions for space around the moving back, footrest and mechanism.

Do not use the difference between upright and reclined depth as a wall-clearance rule. A chair’s movement can involve both the back and footrest; the dimensions alone do not describe that path.

Compare Hudson, Hudson Petite and Lucca

The measurements below are listed on the linked ZIN Home product pages. Overall dimensions are width × depth × height, in inches.

Recliner dimensions for room and seat planning
Model Overall size Reclined depth Seat height / depth
Hudson Recliner — Special Order 33 × 39 × 38 65 18 / 25
Hudson Skirted Petite Recliner — Special Order 30 × 40 × 38 65 19 / 24
Lucca Recliner 26 × 37 × 37 56 19 / 21

“Petite” does not necessarily mean less reclined space

The Hudson Skirted Petite is narrower than the Hudson Recliner in this comparison, but both list a 65-inch reclined depth. The petite version also lists a different seat height and depth. Choose it for the dimensions that suit you—not on the assumption that a narrower chair will need less space from front to back.

A shorter reclined depth is only part of the decision

Lucca’s listed 56-inch reclined depth provides a different planning option, alongside a 26-inch overall width and a 21-inch seat depth. Its open wood-arm silhouette also reads differently from the upholstered Hudson designs. Compare those proportions with a chair you already find comfortable, then confirm the operating instructions for the exact item.

Map the chair before arranging the rest of the room

  1. Mark the upright width and depth on the floor with removable tape.
  2. Mark a second area for the listed reclined depth. Treat this as an initial space check, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s clearance diagram.
  3. Add the wall, baseboard, window treatment, table and lamp to the plan. Check what could enter the moving chair’s path.
  4. Keep the route through the room usable when the chair is extended, not only when it is closed.
  5. For a powered model, confirm the power arrangement and keep cables clear of walkways and moving parts as directed by the manufacturer.

A side table may be easier to place outside the footrest’s travel than a table directly in front. Keep the surface reachable while seated without crowding the mechanism. For the wider seating arrangement, use our accent-chair placement guide alongside these motion-specific checks.

Check delivery access separately from room fit

A chair that fits in its final position may still be difficult to bring through a stairwell or doorway. Record door openings, turns, landings and low overhead points. Ask for the exact item’s packaged dimensions and any approved delivery or assembly procedure. Do not assume the back or legs can be removed.

The Hudson Skirted Petite page lists a diagonal entry-clearance dimension, but that is not a promise that every doorway of the same width will work. The complete delivery route and handling method still need checking.

Before choosing upholstery or placing an order

Confirm the exact model and cover, the dimensions for that configuration, its mechanism instructions and current availability. A special-order designation does not establish a delivery date. Lifestyle photographs illustrate the design; ask which upholstery choices are currently offered for the item you select.

Browse accent chairs to compare the visual weight of different silhouettes, then return to the recliner’s full specifications. The right choice should work as a seat, as a moving piece of furniture and as part of the room around it.
