A living room is not complete without the perfect coffee table—it anchors the space. Think about your space. The ideal distance from the edge of the sofa to the edge of the coffee table should be 18 inches. This allows you to be close enough to set down a drink, but far enough to stretch out your legs after a long day.

Consider the flow of the room. Leave at least 30 inches from the outer edge of the coffee table to the TV stand or media cabinet.

The height of the coffee table is very important—it should be about one or two inches lower than the sofa or chairs that surround it. Most coffee tables will be about 16-18 inches in height, while you may also find some coffee tables that are 20 or 21 inches high, for taller sofas.
