VAN THIEL
Founded in 2001 by Rudy van Thiel Sr. and his sons, Rudy Jr. & Frederik, VAN THIEL & CO. actually began more than 40 years ago, when Rudy Sr. would ride from town to town in his Dutch homeland with antiques strapped to his bicycle. Always on the lookout for great sources of inspiration and intrigued by the stories he would hear, he’d study every detail of each piece he found for creative insight. Since then, Rudy and his sons have drawn inspiration from all over the world, growing VAN THIEL & CO. into a large, high-end furniture source, which they recently moved from its initial location in Beijing to the rising global market of Vietnam. It all started many years ago the old-fashioned way: by sourcing the European countryside and hand-picking antiques - one piece at a time. Almost fifty years later, VAN THIEL & CO. has specialized in restoring and supplying authentic European antiques to furniture stores worldwide. The company has expanded into the production of artisanal style solid wooden case goods with a niche approach by offering refined, hand applied finishes reflecting true antique patinas. By also producing handcrafted upholstery, hand-forged iron, paintings, porcelain and unique objects the company has grown to a sought after, one stop source for better home stores. "Antiques are the heart and soul of our company," - Rudy van Thiel, Sr.
Inspired by fine antique pieces from Europe, India, Asia and other place around the globe, VAN THIEL & CO. evolved from finding and restoring antiques to manufacturing exact replicas of the vast array of furniture, objects and art they collect. The VAN THIEL & CO. collection represents a the family's favorite choice of furniture & accessories, well elaborated and selected. In the process of reproduction, every piece of furniture is bench-made precisely like the original, with the same solid backs and dovetail construction.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
Having an inventory of over 25,000 antiques at your fingertips made our selection process a daunting task! Actually, we felt a bit like kids in a candy store. As hard as it was, we whittled our collection to the primary core, but our job was still far from over. The chosen assortment needed to be recreated with the look, feel, charm and patina of the original antiques. That is why we invested lots of hours to master our finishing procedures - and still we are not close to thinking we have reached the end. Till now, we developed the most authentic recreations of old world finishes - a painstaking task that only VAN THIEL & CO. can do. "We might imagine that a piece has been standing for centuries on the stone floor of a French home. Assuming the maid mopped every day, we have to faithfully recreate the water spotting and warping that would likely have occurred." - Rudy van Thiel, Jr. Claw marks from animals, tiny worm holes, variations in colors due to sun exposure, and the random dents and dings that are the inevitable result of everyday use for generations - all are replicated in minute detail. It takes an artisan an entire day to perfectly place and hammer in the hundreds of hand-forged iron nails that complete the distinctive finish.
BENCH-MADE CASEGOODS
Bench-Made is a line of both hand crafted and finished hardwood furniture. It is highlighted by its delicate accents, bronze and iron hardware, solid marble tops, subtle antiquing, and a selection of hand rubbed wax finishes applied to hardwoods. For generations fine bench-made furniture has been built in the shops of fine cabinet makers. These craftsmen hand fashioned furniture and replicas for the owners of the most significant homes around the world. Whether a dining table or desk, or a small decorative furniture item, the master craftsman carefully selected each piece of wood in his shop for its size, grain, color, figure, and suitability for each piece of furniture being conceived. Having a team of trained artisans at our production facility, we can guarantee high quality casegood manufacturing, hand made and with delicate details.
